Is Thai food halal? The short answer
Thai food can be fully halal, but whether a given restaurant’s food is halal depends on a handful of things you can check in one conversation: the meat sourcing, pork, the seafood-based sauces, and alcohol. The cuisine makes this easier than most, because pork is not in every dish, seafood is central to the flavour, and so much of the menu is plant-based.
At Evergreen Thai Kitchen & Bar, 175 Dundas St W, Toronto, the answer is simple: the food is 100% halal. The meat is halal and sourced from FoodsUp, the seafood is halal, and there is no pork on the menu. The rest of this guide explains why each of the usual questions comes out the way it does.
Meat sourcing
The first thing to check at any Thai restaurant is where the chicken, beef, and other meat comes from, because “no pork” is not the same as halal-sourced. At Evergreen Thai, meat is halal and sourced from FoodsUp. That covers dishes like Cashew Chicken, Basil Stir Fry, Chicken Satay, and the meat versions of Pad Thai and the curries.
Pork
Pork is the second check. It appears in some Thai and Chinese cooking as a protein, in sausages, and in some stocks. At Evergreen Thai there is no pork on the menu.
Fish sauce
Fish sauce is the salty backbone of Thai cooking: stir-fries, noodle dishes, dipping sauces, soups, and the sauce in Pad Thai. It is made from fermented fish and salt, which makes it a seafood product, and seafood is halal. It is part of the halal menu at Evergreen Thai.
Oyster sauce
Oyster sauce is a thick, savoury sauce made from oyster extract, common in stir-fries like Basil Stir Fry and in noodle dishes like Pad See Ew. It is also seafood-based, and seafood is halal, so it too is part of the halal menu.
Curry paste and shrimp paste
A Thai curry is curry paste, coconut milk, vegetables, and a protein. Coconut milk is plant-based, and where a paste includes shrimp paste, that is a seafood product. The part that decides whether a curry is halal is the protein, which at Evergreen Thai is halal-sourced. The guide on whether Thai curry is dairy-free goes through what goes into a curry pot in more detail.
Alcohol
Alcohol is the one point worth being plain about. Evergreen Thai Kitchen & Bar is a licensed bar, so alcohol is served in the restaurant. Guests who prefer an alcohol-free setting can choose takeout, delivery, or catering. A catered event at your own office, venue, or home is entirely alcohol-free.
Seafood on the menu
Because seafood is halal, seafood dishes sit comfortably on a halal menu. At Evergreen Thai that includes Crispy Calamari and the seafood curries and stir-fries, alongside the chicken, beef, and vegetarian dishes. Seafood is also a good choice for groups who want lighter dishes alongside the curries.
A ten-second checklist for any Thai restaurant
If you are choosing between restaurants, these questions get a quick answer:
- Is the meat halal, and who supplies it?
- Is there any pork on the menu?
- Is the seafood, including the sauces, part of the halal menu?
- Is alcohol served on the premises?
At Evergreen Thai the answers are: halal meat from FoodsUp; no pork; yes, the seafood and its sauces are part of the menu; and yes, the restaurant is also a licensed bar.
Vegetarian Thai food for halal diners
Many halal-conscious guests also like vegetarian dishes for variety or because they avoid meat on certain days. Vegetable Pad Thai, Mixed Vegetable Curry, Tofu Basil, Vegetable Fried Rice, Spring Rolls, and Golden Tofu are all vegetarian, and vegan versions are available on request, since fish sauce and oyster sauce are used in the kitchen. For a fully meat-free table, VegeDelight at 173 Dundas St W next door is a fully vegetarian Chinese and Thai restaurant, covered in the guide to halal Chinese vegetarian food in Toronto. The vegetarian catering guide explains how to ask for vegetarian and vegan versions, and ingredient transparency for catering orders covers how to ask for a written dish list.
